Industrial training is part of the Aquaculture program content for undergraduate students in Universiti Malaysia Sabah, (UMS). This training aims to help the students to gain knowledge, working experience and insight about their field before stepping into the working environment. In UMS, Student’s Committee of Aquaculture Industrial Training in Japan (SCOAIT) was established by Aquaculture students in year 2002 in order to obtain some financial budget to partially support the training expenses for 10 weeks in Japan. In order to be financially prepared for the training in Japan, SCOAIT works as a team on activities such as culture different species of fish and marketed it to the local market. Besides that, we also will acquire sponsorship from government and private sector as well as from UMS.
Japan is one of the leading countries in aquaculture due to their high technology applications in innovative research and development in this field. This leads to the interest of aquaculture student of UMS to do their industrial training in Japan, in order to gain more knowledge to help the students to study further or develop their career. Since 2002 and up until now more than 112 students were trained in Japan.
In 2011, there will be 13 undergraduate students who wish to perform their training in Japan. This industrial training takes time for about 10 to 11 weeks. Students will be divided into either private companies or university research stations. At the present, the private companies that offer industrial training are Kansai Bussan Co. ltd, and Yoshikawa Suisan Co. Ltd in Takamatsu Kagawa prefecture. Yanmar Co. Ltd in Oita prefecture also offering industrial training. There are three research stations of Kinki University offers that training which are Uragami, Shirahama and Oshima Fisheries Research Station in Takamatsu Kagawa prefecture.
